This surgery aims at patients whose B.M.I. (Body Mass Index) is above the overweight range of 40 and who are willing to accept new eating habits i.e. eating in small quantities. It applies to patients with severe obesity problems including patients suffering from morbid obesity – a more severe problem – who have not been able to lose weight even though they have gone through a dietary program.
This is an operation on the stomach as to reduce the quantity of food it can take in as well as rearrange the small intestine in order to take smaller amount of calories in. The gastric bypass, also known as “stomach stapling” or “stomach bonding”, is inserted in order to create an egg sized pouch in the stomach therefore reducing drastically the amount of food the patient can consume and finally causing loss of weight.
Find out your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres and then dividing the result by your height in metres again.
Health weight BMI = 18.5 to 24.9;
Overweight BMI = 25 to 29.9;
Obese BMI = 30 to 39.9;
Severe BMI = 40 plus.
As with any other major operation, patients are bound to experience some pain and risks associated with it.
In case of severe obesity the patients have to be hospitalized in advance.
Candidates can lose from 100 to over 200 pounds weight although is some cases patients don't loose the amount of weight desired but achieve good results.
